Over the past few years I have been experimenting with treating certain igneous rocks as plastic materials with the application of heat and pressure. The resulting objects are neither rock, nor glass, nor conventional ceramic. I refer to the finished material as “meta-ceramic” since I have found no reference to this material in either art or technical literature. At this point the techniques for handling the material are still experimental, however certain rock types heated, formed, and cooled within specific parameters show promise for both artistic and utilitarian purposes.
